Data Meet Energy

Inera SA: Data and Analytics culture as an accelerator for the energy sector: INERA SA, a consortium of nine energy providers in Western Switzerland, aimed to turn untapped data—from energy consumption to weather and geodata—into real business value. Using the 4Q model and a clear Data and Analytics strategy, they built a scalable platform that accelerates innovation, reduces costs, and dramatically shortens the time-to-market for new data-driven services. Read how a sustainable data and analytics culture is transforming the energy sector.

The Challenge

Inera SA, an alliance of ten energy providers from Western Switzerland, competes with major utilities. As a lean organization, it lacked the core data and analytics expertise required to create innovative digital services.

The Risks: Slow time-to-market, high development costs, and untapped data potential from energy production, consumption, geographic, or weather data. To remain competitive and successfully deliver data-driven services, a holistic and future-proof data strategy was needed.

The Approach: The 4Q-Model

Inera chose Navique and the 4Q-model. The goal was to build a modern data and analytics culture that accelerates innovation and strengthens partner utilities in their digital transformation.

The Method: The Process Along the 4D-Phases

Every transformation begins with a clear “why.” Building on this, our 4D phases—Discover, Design, Develop, Deploy—guide Inera from strategy to operational implementation.

Discover

Clarification of the “why” at the data level.

Design of the overarching architecture, principles, and processes for future data and analytics capabilities across four quadrants: value creation, technology management, governance, and organisation.

Definition of the desired value creation and the impact of data- and digital-driven transformation on Inera’s business model.

DesignDevelopment of use cases for data assets such as time series on energy consumption, geographic, and weather data.

Design of solution architectures for data and analytics products, always aligned with the defined purpose.

Drafting of a target operating model (TOM) for data and analytics based on the shared-responsibility principle.

Develop

Implementation of a secure, scalable data platform using open-source technologies on Microsoft Azure.

Development of data products for specific use cases—such as the meter-to-cash process, consumption analyses, and load curves—delivering measurable value.

Develop – Go Live

Go Live – Industrialisierung der MVP-Datenplattform und Datenprodukte.Industrialization of the MVP data platform and data products.

Expansion with additional data and analytics products and data-driven use cases, consistently aligned with the overarching objectives.

The Result: Measurable Success for Inera

30 % shorter project phases, resulting in lower costs thanks to predefined Navique deliverables.

Scalable, secure data platform with self-service capabilities for developers.

Faster time-to-market for new data-driven products and services.

Reduced project risks through standardization and cost transparency.

Economies of scale for partner utilities, who now benefit from affordable, innovative data services.

A sustainable data and analytics culture that integrates vision, strategy, technology, and organization, creating measurable value for Inera.

"Thanks to our collaboration with Navique, we can strengthen our role as an innovation driver in the Western Swiss energy sector. The new data and analytics culture enables us to shape the energy transition in a data-driven, agile, and sustainable way."
